Gold Coin

'Gold Coin' is an Acer longipes cultivar (sometimes classified as Acer ampleum) with large, broadly rounded foliage that emerges with orange-bronze tones before turning a brilliant, metallic yellow in spring. The tree maintains bright yellow coloration through much of the growing season, though foliage may soften to a paler lime-yellow in summer heat and full sun; older growth beneath new leaves creates layered color contrast. It reaches 12-15 feet tall over 10 years with a naturally open, somewhat irregular growth habit. According to the growers at Mr Maple, 'Gold Coin' was originally introduced by S. Fell Plantarium and performs well in full sun to part shade, though some afternoon shade benefits color in deep southern climates; the tree is slow initially after planting but accelerates once established and is notably durable in humid conditions where many yellow-foliaged plants struggle.
