About
Cupressus macrocarpa 'Greenstead Magnificent' is a dwarf Monterey cypress with distinctive silvery-blue, threadlike foliage that develops a frosty, electric tone in new growth. It grows to approximately 3 feet tall by 6 feet wide over ten years, with a low, spreading habit well suited to rock gardens and mixed conifer plantings. The cultivar originated in the 1950s as a branch sport discovered in Australia on C. m. horizontalis by a grower named Hall, and according to the growers at Mr. Maple, it thrives in zones 7-11 with notable heat tolerance and has proven hardy even in colder regions such as Charlotte, North Carolina. Its rare, intense blue-silver color provides striking contrast when paired with warm-toned foliage such as Japanese maples or golden conifers.
