About
'Alan's Gold' is a fast-growing, upright Japanese maple with deeply lobed palmate leaves that emerge bright orange-yellow in spring, shifting to yellow and then yellow-green by early summer before fading to green by midsummer, with red-orange fall color. The cultivar is distinctive as the only pinebark-type maple with significant spring color; the fissured, exfoliating bark typically develops in the fifth to sixth year of growth, creating a naturally aged appearance. According to the growers at Mr Maple, this tree was selected for spring color that rivals or exceeds better-known cultivars like Katsura, and the combination of vibrant spring interest with dramatic bark development makes it exceptional for both landscape and bonsai use. It reaches 8-10 feet at maturity and is notably vigorous, often putting on 18 inches or more of growth annually once established; it tolerates full sun and heat well across zones 5-9.
