Acer sieboldianum 'Seki no kegon' Weeping Japanese Maple

Acer sieboldianum 'Seki no kegon' is a weeping cultivar distinguished by its large, undivided leaves, a notably unusual trait among weeping Japanese maples, which create a full, elegant canopy. The tree exhibits a semi-pendulous habit when young, becoming increasingly cascading with age, and typically reaches 3-4 feet tall by 6-8 feet wide in ten years. Spring foliage emerges as a lustrous green before shifting through dark red tones in autumn to bright red at leaf drop, often with concurrent orange and yellow hues. According to the growers at Mr Maple, this cultivar was discovered as a chance seedling from an ancient wild population near Nikkō National Park in Japan and was formally released in 2010; when grafted onto Acer sieboldianum rootstock, it gains enhanced cold hardiness, performing reliably in zones 4b, 9.
