FOR PICKUP ONLY | Acer shirasawanum 'Purple Thunder' Japanese Maple | DOES NOT SHIP

Acer shirasawanum 'Purple Thunder' is a red-foliaged full-moon maple with a heavier, more textured leaf than typical of its species, giving it a distinctive matsutake-like structure. The foliage emerges deep purple-red in spring and transitions to bright fiery red in autumn. An upright, vigorous grower reaching approximately 12-15 feet in height within ten years, it grows notably faster than related cultivars. According to the growers at Mr Maple, 'Purple Thunder' is an introduction by Talon Buck Holtz with some Acer shirasawanum influence; its late leafing habit makes it particularly valuable for gardens in colder climates or areas prone to spring frost, as it typically breaks dormancy later than standard Japanese maples.
