Acer shirasawanum 'Plum Wine' Japanese Maple

'Plum Wine' is a full-moon Japanese maple with burgundy foliage marked by prominent lime-green veins that create striking internal contrast. New spring growth emerges deep plum-colored, gradually transitioning by late summer to a two-toned effect as chartreuse blends with the burgundy base; in autumn, the foliage shifts to electric yellow with reddish tones. The cultivar reaches 6-8 feet in height at maturity with a vigorous, upright habit. A Buchholz Nursery introduction, 'Plum Wine' is an F2 seedling of 'Shira Red' that achieves the fuller, rounder leaf shape characteristic of Acer shirasawanum while retaining red coloration, a trait rarely seen in red shirasawanums. It thrives in full sun in cooler climates but benefits from afternoon shade protection in hotter regions, and shows good cold hardiness (zones 5-9).
