Acer shirasawanum ‘Bashful' Dwarf Full Moon Japanese Maple

Acer shirasawanum 'Bashful' is a dwarf, densely globular cultivar with large, rounded full-moon-type leaves that emerge bronze-pink before transitioning to lime green, with fine serrations and distinctive downward-cupping texture that creates a ruffled, three-dimensional appearance. The plant reaches approximately 4-5 feet tall and wide in ten years, making it exceptionally useful for containers and confined garden spaces. Fall color shifts to yellow with orange tones. According to the growers at Mr Maple, 'Bashful' represents a breakthrough for Acer shirasawanum, combining the full-moon leaf characteristic with a compact, ball-like habit previously uncommon in the species. The cultivar thrives in zones 5-9 with morning sun and afternoon shade protection, particularly in hotter climates; consistent drainage is critical whether grown in containers or in-ground.
