About
Acer shirasawanum 'Aureum' is a full moon maple with large, rounded leaves that display striking seasonal color shifts. Spring foliage emerges bright chartreuse to golden yellow, transitioning to orange-red in fall; with sufficient morning sun and afternoon shade protection, leaves may develop purple-red borders and highlighted veins. This cultivar grows slowly, reaching 6-8 feet tall over approximately ten years, making it well-suited to container cultivation and partially shaded garden positions. According to the growers at Mr Maple, this classic full moon maple was originally introduced at Esveld Nursery in Holland and reportedly descends from plants collected by the 19th-century plant hunter Philipp Franz von Siebold; the cultivar thrives in high dappled shade where its luminous yellow foliage brightens darker garden areas and pairs beautifully with azaleas and other Japanese maples.
