Acer pubipalmatum 'Flying Daggers' is a Chinese maple with exceptionally narrow, elongated, deeply lobed foliage that develops an electric fire-engine-red fall color rivaling that of Osakazuki. The cultivar reaches approximately 8 feet tall and develops a dense, layered branching habit reminiscent of Mikawa Yatsubusa, becoming more refined with age. According to the growers at Mr Maple, 'Flying Daggers' originated as a seedling collected from the Keith Arboretum in Chapel Hill and was one of the very first selected forms of Acer pubipalmatum; the cultivar was chosen primarily for its exceptional fall color and distinctive leaf shape. As a pubipalmatum, this selection is notably drought and heat tolerant, matures with striated bark characteristic of the species, and suits gardeners seeking refined texture and reliable autumn performance.
