Acer pseudoplatanus 'Esk Sunset' Rare Variegated Eskimo Sunset Maple

'Esk Sunset' is a variegated sycamore maple with large leaves that emerge green with pink and white speckled variegation in spring, gradually shifting to green and cream by midsummer; the undersides display striking purple-red coloration, especially visible when viewing the canopy from below. Fall foliage transitions to golden yellow and orange tones. This cultivar reaches approximately 15 feet within 10 years and develops chalk-white bark with age, creating textural interest in winter. Despite its common misnaming as "Eskimo Sunset," the cultivar originates from the Esk Valley in New Zealand and performs best in zones 5-8; it thrives in full sun when planted in the ground and benefits from being positioned where the red leaf undersides can be appreciated from below, making it an excellent shade tree for creating shelter around smaller maples in a collection.
