Acer palmatum 'Yama nishiki' Snow Peak Japanese Maple

'Yama nishiki' is an upright Japanese maple distinguished by stable white reticulated variegation with green veins that intensifies under cool conditions and morning sun exposure, creating a snow-dusted appearance. The variegation remains consistent as the tree matures and does not revert, though new growth may initially appear greener; avoiding excess nitrogen promotes the most vivid white patterning. Fall foliage transitions from orange to bright red, sometimes displaying pink undertones where variegation is most pronounced. Typically reaching 8-10 feet tall with a narrow, upright habit, it performs best in light morning sun combined with afternoon shade and benefits from moderate growth conditions that enhance leaf coloration and variegation clarity. According to the growers at Mr Maple, this cultivar was introduced to the nursery trade by Fred Hooks, who brought it back from Japan, and is best sited near walkways or house foundations where its intricate leaf patterning can be appreciated up close.
