Acer palmatum x 'Purple Curl' Japanese Maple

'Purple Curl' is a distinctive Japanese maple with deep burgundy to maroon leaves that curl and twist downward in a characteristic cupping habit, accented by mottled green reticulation in the veins. The foliage transitions to orange and red tones in autumn. This cultivar grows as a small upright tree reaching approximately 8 feet in height and width within ten years, with semi-pendulous lateral branching that beautifully displays the unique recurved foliage. According to the growers at Mr Maple, 'Purple Curl' was discovered by Talon Buchholz of Buchholz Nursery in Oregon as a chance seedling from 'Amber Ghost', possibly with shirasawanum parentage based on its distinctive convex leaf form. For best results, position this tree as a focal point near a walkway or viewing area where its distinctive leaf texture can be appreciated; it performs well in containers with good drainage and prefers afternoon shade in warmer climates.
