'Waveleaf' is a recently introduced Japanese maple cultivar with deeply lobed, wavy-margined leaves displaying dark red veins and interior coloration that creates striking purple-red reticulation against a glossy foliage surface. The tree develops an upright, moderately vigorous form, reaching approximately 8-10 feet tall over ten years with notably upright branching. Foliage color intensifies to bright purple and dark maroon in autumn. According to the growers at Mr Maple, 'Waveleaf' originated as a seedling selection at Buckolz Nursery by Talon Buckles; initially unnamed among his "rising stars," it was retained and cultivated after customers repeatedly sought it out for its exceptional color and sheen. The cultivar performs well in zones 5-9, though afternoon shade is recommended in hotter climates to prevent leaf scorch; it is notably vigorous, typically adding more than a foot of growth annually.
