About
'Watnong' is a dissected-leaf Japanese maple with a naturally cascading, umbrella-shaped habit that reaches approximately 4-6 feet tall by 6-8 feet wide at maturity. New foliage emerges bright pink-red before transitioning through pink-tinged green in summer and finally to warm orange and red tones in fall, with successive flushes of colorful new growth extending the display throughout the season. The cultivar displays an unusually open, plateau-like canopy structure among dissectums, giving it a refined, bonsai-esque appearance that develops with minimal intervention. According to the growers at Mr Maple, 'Watnong' was introduced by Watnong Nursery in New Jersey and is notably cold- and heat-hardy, thriving across zones 5-9 (with protection in zone 5), making it equally at home in northern and deep southern climates, a trait that earned favor from prominent maple enthusiast Pat Diehl for its performance in Alabama's heat. The cultivar performs best in full sun and is well-suited to container cultivation as well as in-ground planting.
