About
'Villa Taranto' is an upright Japanese maple with deeply dissected, thread-like leaflets characteristic of the *dissectum* group. New growth emerges mauve-red with green highlights, while the tree develops a distinctive V-shaped habit that grows wider than tall, reaching approximately 6-8 feet in ten years. The foliage shifts to bright yellow and orange in autumn. According to the growers at Mr Maple, this cultivar was discovered by Cor van Gelderen of Esveld Nursery while visiting Villa Taranto Gardens in Italy, and it combines the fine, strap-like leaf texture typical of *dissectum* selections with a more compact, spreading form than most cultivars in this group. The tree performs well in full sun in cooler climates but benefits from afternoon shade in hot regions.
