About
Acer palmatum 'Ukigumo', known as Floating Clouds, emerges in spring with white and pale pink variegation over green that fades to soft green with white mottling by midsummer; variegation is notably inconsistent year to year and may be minimal or absent in very hot climates. The tree develops an upright form, maturing to 10-12 feet tall in ten years with a slightly narrower spread, and displays warm orange to red autumn color. For best white variegation, plant in dappled shade with morning sun and afternoon protection, maintain minimal nitrogen fertilizer to slow spring leaf emergence, and expect the most vivid white only in one to two years out of three, though even in green years, the autumn display makes this cultivar worthwhile in the garden.
