'Twombly's Red Sentinel' is a narrowly columnar Japanese maple that reaches 10-12 feet tall and 3-5 feet wide, making it well-suited for confined spaces. The broad, star-shaped leaves emerge crimson red in spring, quickly darkening to burgundy, and the plant's vigorous, nearly continuous growth creates a two-toned effect through much of the growing season. Summer foliage remains burgundy-red even in hot climates, transitioning to bright red in fall, with dark red stems providing winter interest. This cultivar tolerates full sun exposure and performs well across zones 5-9 in well-drained soil.
