Acer palmatum 'Taimen nishiki' Japanese Maple

'Taimen nishiki' is a rare variegated Japanese maple notable for its complex foliage progression throughout the season. Spring growth emerges bright fiery red over dark maroon, transitioning to pink-red variegation and eventually cream-colored markings by summer; removing reverted (solid-colored) shoots after the spring flush encourages secondary growth with enhanced variegation. The cultivar reaches 8-10 feet tall in 15 years and displays brilliant scarlet fall color. This selection from 1882 is susceptible to reversion, making consistent maintenance necessary to preserve its distinctive variegated character.
