About
Acer palmatum seedlings display the species' characteristic palmate leaves in shades of light green with reddish tinges in spring, deepening to darker green through summer before turning bright orange and red in autumn. These trees are notably hardy and variable in form, reflecting their origin as open-pollinated seedlings rather than clones. They typically grow 25-30 feet tall at maturity with an upright, spreading habit suited to multiple landscape roles or bonsai cultivation. Seedlings are generally more cold-tolerant than named cultivars, making them a reliable choice for gardeners new to Japanese maples.
