About
'Sherwood Elfin' is a dwarf cultivar of Acer palmatum subsp. matsumurae, originating as a chance seedling from 'Sherwood Flame'. It produces deeply lobed leaves that emerge bright red in early spring, quickly darkening to deep maroon through the growing season, then shifting to bright crimson in autumn. With a dense, compact habit, it reaches 4-6 feet in height over 15-20 years. This selection demonstrates notable heat tolerance and performs well in the warm climates of the southeastern United States.
