About
Acer palmatum 'Seiryu' is the only commonly available upright lace-leaf Japanese maple, distinguished by its columnar to vase-shaped habit and finely dissected foliage. Leaves emerge green with reddish-pink marginal tints in spring, fade to a lustrous medium green by midsummer, and shift to red and orange tones in autumn. This exceptionally vigorous cultivar grows 1 to 1.5 feet annually, reaching 14-16 feet tall and 10-12 feet wide at maturity, and performs well in both sun and partial shade with excellent heat tolerance, traits that have made it popular in Southern gardens as a specimen tree and as understory shade for smaller maples. According to the growers at Mr Maple, 'Seiryu' was imported to the United States by Wada Nursery in the 1970s and gained immediate popularity; the name refers to "blue-green dragon," alluding to the emerald-blue tones that develop in mature foliage when shaded by new growth overhead.
