About
Acer palmatum 'Sawa chidori' is a reticulated cultivar with spring foliage of creamy leaves traced by prominent lime-green veining, a striking contrast that gradually fades as the tree develops more chlorophyll through summer. The leaves have a soft, slightly ruffled texture with minimal serration along the edges, and bright pink samaras add spring interest before the canopy matures. According to the growers at Mr Maple, this is a chance seedling found in Shizoku Prefecture, Japan, with different parentage than most other ghost-series maples, giving it a unique character among reticulated forms. The tree reaches approximately 8 feet in height over 15 years with an upright yet gently semi-pendulous habit, displaying cherry-red fall color. For best color expression and growth, provide morning sun with afternoon shade protection.
