About
Acer palmatum 'Ryusen' is a strongly pendulous cultivar distinguished by deeply palmate foliage and an extreme cascading branching habit unusual among weeping maples. Leaves emerge bright chartreuse in spring, mature to dark green in summer, and turn yellow to red-orange in autumn. The tree typically reaches 5-6 feet in height over 15 years but can eventually exceed 8-10 feet; its malleable growth allows training as a staked specimen with a formal central leader or informal cascading form. According to Simply Japanese Maples, this vigorous cultivar performs well in containers and is particularly suited to narrow spaces, retaining walls, and cascading over water features, growing upright initially before sending branches downward rather than spreading outward.
