About
Acer palmatum 'Ryusei' is a strongly weeping dwarf Japanese maple distinguished by fully palmate, star-shaped leaves rather than the finely dissected foliage typical of most cascading maples. The bright green spring foliage darkens somewhat through summer before turning orange in autumn. Without support, this cultivar grows predominantly downward and forms a mounding ground cover; when staked to a desired height, the pendulous branches create a waterfall-like effect. At maturity (10 years), plants typically reach 2-4 feet in height with a 4-6 foot spread, and they develop rapidly in full sun to part shade.
