About
'Rikuzen shidare' is an extremely weeping Japanese maple distinguished by large, palmate green leaves comparable to 'Osakazuki', rather than the finer foliage typical of other pendulous cultivars. The foliage transitions to a bright golden yellow in autumn. According to the growers at Mr Maple, this cultivar originated at a temple in Japan's Rikuzen province and was named and introduced to cultivation by Tsukasa Maple Nursery after the tree was preserved through grafting following the 2011 tsunami. The cultivar is notably durable, cold and heat tolerant, and thrives in full sun through part shade; staking to 5-6 feet is recommended to develop structure before allowing the branches to cascade, and it performs well in containers with adequate drainage as well as in mixed garden plantings.
