Acer palmatum 'Red Filigree Lace' Dwarf Japanese Maple

'Red Filigree Lace' is a dwarf Japanese maple prized for its exceptionally finely dissected, thread-like foliage that emerges red in spring, deepens to dark purple-red through summer, and shifts to crimson in autumn. The tree develops a low, mounding, strongly pendulous habit, typically reaching 3 feet tall by 3 feet wide in ten years, though specimen plants can grow considerably larger with age. Unlike many red cultivars, it holds its deep red color exceptionally well even in partial to high shade, making it an excellent choice for shaded garden spots. According to the growers at Mr Maple, the cultivar's extremely fine leaf texture, so delicate it is often difficult to photograph, combined with its reliable color retention and compact size make it equally valuable as a container plant or landscape specimen; the variety's popularity in the trade stems partly from its unique appearance and early propagation challenges, though it is now more readily available through nurseries.
