About
Acer palmatum 'Peve Starfish' is distinguished by its highly distinctive leaf lobes that curl inward, creating a pronounced starfish-like appearance. Foliage emerges burgundy-red in spring, gradually fading to duller burgundy through summer before igniting to brilliant pink-red in autumn. This cultivar matures as a narrow, upright tree reaching approximately 6-8 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide with moderate growth, considerably slower than many other Japanese maple cultivars. According to the growers at Mr Maple, the name was coined when Talon Buchholz observed the cupped leaf form and remarked that it resembled a starfish, a visual distinction that extends to the entire canopy's downward-cupping architecture, lending the tree a distinctive, formal appearance suitable for mixed plantings or as a focal point in smaller gardens.
