Acer palmatum 'Murasaki kiyohime' Dwarf Japanese Maple

'Murasaki kiyohime' is a dwarf Japanese maple with a distinctive low, spreading habit that reaches approximately 2 feet tall and 4-5 feet wide at maturity, forming a broad mound with slightly upright character when young. New growth emerges in spring with striking maroon-red leaf margins that fade to light kelly green through summer, then shift to orange and red tones in fall. The cultivar is vigorous and fast-growing, developing into a well-defined specimen within several years. According to the growers at Mr Maple, this is one of the quintessential dwarf Japanese maples, prized for its exceptional heat tolerance (hardy zones 5-9), durability, and ease of cultivation; it performs well in both ground plantings and containers, though potted specimens benefit from afternoon shade and consistently good drainage. The small leaves and refined branching make it equally suited to garden borders, mass plantings, container gardening, and bonsai cultivation.
