About
Acer palmatum 'Miss Piggy' is a dwarf Japanese maple distinguished by fasciated and twisted branch tips, a rare phenomenon in which stems flatten and contort, creating irregular branching patterns and dense foliage clusters. Small palmate leaves emerge dark green in spring and turn red in autumn; the cultivar is notably heat tolerant and performs well in full sun through partial shade across zones 5-9. It matures to approximately 6-8 feet tall with a compact, multi-stemmed habit and sturdy growth, making it suitable for small to mid-sized landscapes and containers. Named by the late Dick Vander Mat for the distinctive pigtail-like cork-screw growths arising from the base, 'Miss Piggy' offers structural interest even when leafless, with the irregular branching pattern lending itself well to bonsai experimentation or display alongside traditional lace-leaf cultivars.
