Acer palmatum 'Maymont' Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum 'Maymont' is a weeping Japanese maple with brick-red new growth that transitions to green leaves with bronze highlights through summer, then to bright yellow and orange in fall. The contrasting red stems provide visual interest against the foliage. It develops a cascading, umbrella-shaped habit, reaching approximately 3-4 feet tall and 5-6 feet wide within ten years. According to the growers at Mr Maple, this selection was discovered at Maymont Park in Virginia, where a large specimen grows in the estate's Japanese gardens. The cultivar thrives in containers and on hillsides, where its weeping structure can be fully appreciated; good drainage is essential in either setting. Its seasonal color progression, from bronze-tinted spring growth to yellow and orange fall foliage, pairs well with upright maples of contrasting hue.
