Acer palmatum 'Manyo no sato' is a striking variegated Japanese maple with purple-red foliage in early spring heavily marked with chartreuse; as temperatures warm, the purple fades to mauve-red and eventually green, then transitions to orange-red in autumn, with the variegation appearing first in seasonal color shifts. The distinctive feature is the unique variegation on each leaf, often accompanied by a characteristic sickle-like twist that differs from leaf to leaf, creating exceptional textural interest when viewed up close. The tree reaches approximately 6 feet tall by 8 feet wide in ten years, developing a balanced, slightly spreading form. According to the growers at Mr Maple, this cultivar was discovered by Utaka Tanaka of Sucasa Maple in Japan; the name translates as "Village of 10,000 Leaves," reflecting how every leaf presents a different pattern and twist.
