Acer palmatum dissectum 'Lionheart' is a red laceleaf Japanese maple with deeply dissected foliage that emerges cherry-red in spring, transitions to bronze and maroon tones through the growing season, and displays bright orange to scarlet-red autumn color. The cultivar exhibits a semi-upright, semi-pendulous habit with vigorous growth, reaching 6-8 feet in height within ten years and ultimately maturing to 8-10 feet with an open, arching structure that develops an older-tree aesthetic even when young. According to the growers at Mr Maple, 'Lionheart' was introduced by Duncan and Davies Nursery in New Zealand and is notably one of the fastest-growing red dissectum cultivars available, making it suitable for gardeners seeking substantial height and texture quickly. It tolerates zones 5-9 and performs well in full sun through zone 8; in zone 9, afternoon shade protection is recommended. Best established with good drainage and minimal fertilizer, it can be staked upright when young to develop a distinctive standard form with weeping outer branches.
