About
'Kuro hime' is a compact dwarf Japanese maple with a dense, strongly upright habit that reaches 4-5 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide at maturity. Foliage emerges in early spring as bright pink-red, then shifts to blue-green by mid-summer; repeated flushes of pink-red new growth appear over the mature foliage throughout the growing season, creating a striking two-tone color contrast. Fall color transitions to orange-red. A newer selection introduced from Japan to the United States in 2008, 'Kuro hime' (meaning "dark red princess") has gained popularity for its small, finely textured leaves, exceptional vigor for a dwarf cultivar, and suitability for small garden spaces, containers, and bonsai work. The shallow, noninvasive root system and dense structure make it well-suited to container cultivation; good drainage is essential in all settings.
