Acer palmatum 'Kurenai jishi' Red Lion Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum 'Kurenai Jishi' is a dwarf cultivar reaching 4-6 feet in height with a densely branched, compact, upright habit suited to small spaces and containers. New spring growth emerges in deep brick-red to maroon tones with distinctly twisted, curling foliage on medium to slightly elongated leaves; summer color shifts to bronze-green with contrasting pinkish new growth, before turning to brilliant orange-red in fall. The spring and fall color intensity depends significantly on light exposure, full morning sun to full sun produces the deepest red tones, while excessive shade yields greener foliage. According to the growers at Mr Maple, the cultivar was named by the renowned Japanese maple expert Masayoshi Yano, who selected the name *Kurenai* (deep red) *Jishi* (lion) to describe its characteristic twisted habit reminiscent of the 'Shishi Gashira' family, though with larger, more elongated leaves and a distinctly different texture. It thrives in well-draining soil, zones 5-9, with protection from intense afternoon sun in zone 9 and heavy zone 8 locations, and pairs striking textural contrast with light-foliaged cultivars.
