Acer palmatum 'Koto-no-ito' Japanese Maple

*Acer palmatum* 'Koto-no-ito' is a linearilobum cultivar distinguished by exceptionally fine, threadlike foliage that resembles harp strings, the name literally translates to "Japanese string." The tree displays a distinctly upright habit and reaches 8-12 feet at maturity, with an open, airy canopy that evokes bamboo or traditional Asian garden aesthetics. Spring growth emerges in bright chartreuse, maturing to kelly green by midsummer before shifting to vibrant yellows and oranges in autumn. According to the growers at Mr Maple, this cultivar thrives in full sun in cooler regions but benefits from afternoon shade protection in hotter climates; it requires good drainage and succeeds in USDA zones 5-9. The tree remains stable and vigorous, though summer growth flushes (typically June-August) may produce slightly wider leaves than spring foliage, a harmless seasonal variation. Its striking texture pairs exceptionally well in mixed plantings with contrasting companions, such as full-moon maples or dense, layered cultivars.
