Acer palmatum from Jojakko-ji Temple Small Leaf Japanese Maple

This Japanese maple originated from seed collected at Jojakko-ji Temple in Arashiyama, Kyoto, where it is the head monk's favorite specimen for its exceptionally small foliage combined with brilliant fire-engine red autumn color. The cultivar produces fine, deeply lobed green leaves on a vigorous tree that typically reaches 15-20 feet in height over 20 years. Fall color transitions to vivid red. As these are seedlings rather than clones, individual trees may show minor variation from the parent specimen.
