Acer palmatum 'Ji jiao' Orange Coral Bark Japanese Maple

'Ji jiao' is a relatively recent Chinese introduction distinguished by bright orange-to-yellow bark that transitions from orange at the base to yellow toward the branch tips, a color gradient unique among coral bark maples. Dark green spring and summer foliage turns yellow to orange in autumn. This mid-sized cultivar reaches 8-10 feet in height within ten years and provides strong four-season interest, with bark color intensifying as temperatures drop and chlorophyll fades in winter; color is most vivid in full sun. According to the growers at Mr Maple, the cultivar's name derives from a historical figure known for distinctive feet, and the tree pairs well with evergreens or contrasting coral bark selections, performing best when planted against a backdrop that showcases its winter bark.
