Acer palmatum 'Ilarian' Variegated Japaneses Maple

'Ilarian' is a variegated Japanese maple selection featuring distinctive pink and white variegation across deeply lobed foliage, with each leaf displaying a unique pattern of color distribution. The cultivar reaches approximately 6-8 feet in height over ten years, developing a compact, dense, upright habit that performs well in containers and small garden spaces. According to the growers at Mr Maple, this cultivar was selected by Talon Buchholz at Buchholz Nursery in Oregon and named after a valued employee who discovered the seedling; it is counted among the most intensely variegated of the aritomo nishiki style maples, with foliage that can display bright white in summer and increased pink tones in spring and fall. Afternoon shade is essential, particularly in warm climates, as direct late-day sun can scorch the variegated leaves; consistent moisture and well-drained soil support best growth. Light pruning in late winter to early spring promotes enhanced variegation, and minimal fertilization preserves pink and white coloring, as excessive nitrogen encourages reversion to green foliage. When grown under optimal conditions with proper shade, the cultivar may develop candy-striped or entirely pink bark as winter interest.
