About
'Iijima sunago' is an upright, vase-shaped Japanese maple with notably large, palmatum-style foliage and strong seasonal color progression. New growth emerges pink-red in spring, maturing through mauve brick-red tones before shifting to yellow-green with brick-red and bronze accents in summer, then transitioning from bright yellow to vibrant orange-infused tones in fall. The cultivar reaches 10-12 feet tall within ten years, developing a broad, multi-stemmed form nearly as wide as it is tall at maturity. An 1800s Japanese selection prized by collectors for its dramatic fall color display, 'Iijima sunago' offers superior heat tolerance for southern gardens and provides striking seasonal contrast when planted alongside cultivars with different growth habits and foliage colors, such as those with persistent red or bright green summer tones.
