About
Acer palmatum 'Hogyoku' is an upright, compact cultivar with thick green leaves featuring distinctive recurved margins that create fine textural interest. Summer foliage appears in a bright, picked-up green that deepens to emerald, then transitions in fall to electric yellows and pumpkin-orange, among the most vibrant fall colors in the genus, capable of rivaling sugar maples in intensity. Growth is moderately fast, commonly exceeding one foot per year and reaching 20 feet tall in 20 years, though typically matures at 10-12 feet tall and 6-8 feet wide. According to the growers at Mr Maple, this older Japanese cultivar is exceptionally heat-tolerant (zones 5-9) and performs well in full sun through zone 8B, making it an excellent substitute for northern sugar maple color in warmer climates; in zone 9, afternoon shade is advisable. The tree thrives in well-drained, elevated soil and is prized both as a specimen in traditional Japanese gardens and in collector plantings, where it is often paired with red cultivars such as 'Osakazuki' to showcase complementary seasonal palettes.
