Acer palmatum 'Frosted Purple' Japanese Maple

'Frosted Purple' is a Japanese maple cultivar with deeply lobed purple leaves prominently marked by persistent pink-purple reticulated veining throughout the growing season. New growth flushes emerge bright red in spring with a distinctive lime-green edge that creates a multi-colored effect, while summer foliage develops white frosting over the pink-purple base. Fall color transitions from bright red to deeper red-purple tones. The cultivar reaches approximately 8-10 feet tall with a spreading, somewhat upright habit and notably retains its reticulation well into late summer even in hot climates; afternoon shade protection is beneficial to maintain color intensity and vigor. According to the growers at Mr Maple, 'Frosted Purple' is a seedling selection from 'Purple Ghost' bred by Talon Buchholz, distinguishing itself through more vibrant pink-purple coloring and superior retention of reticulation compared to similar cultivars. It performs best with afternoon sun protection in hotter regions but rewards patient cultivation with exceptional multi-dimensional seasonal color changes.
