About
'Filigree' is a very dwarf, weeping dissectum Japanese maple with exceptionally finely divided, ruffled lacey foliage distinguished by reticulated variegation, fine white flecking across each leaf that resembles the variegation of ghost-type cultivars. Spring leaves emerge with two-toned coloring (bright yellow-lime green borders with bright green veining), gradually transitioning to uniform light green by mid-summer and shifting to yellow and golden tones in autumn; the variegation may persist subtly into fall. The cascading, umbrella-like habit reaches 3-4 feet tall by 3-6 feet wide at maturity, making it an excellent choice for containers, patios, and small spaces. According to the growers at Mr Maple, 'Filigree' thrives with afternoon shade and protection from hot sun, shade intensifies the ghost-like variegation and white flecking, and requires excellent drainage and careful watering in containers; it should never be underplanted with competing vegetation, as its slow growth and modest root system make it sensitive to root competition.
