About
'English Lace' is an upright laceleaf Japanese maple with finely dissected burgundy foliage that emerges deep maroon in early spring and transitions to bright crimson-red in fall. Unlike most red dissectum cultivars, it grows vertically rather than weepingly, reaching 10-12 ft tall and 15 ft wide over approximately 15 years, making it suitable for use as a specimen or shade tree. According to the growers at Mr Maple, this cultivar was discovered as a chance seedling from 'Seiryu' by Jared Childs, and it exhibits notably fast growth, typically 1-1.5 ft annually, with an open, arching habit amenable to cloud pruning. Early staking to 3-4 ft is recommended to establish a strong upright leader and prevent weeping; once established, the tree naturally develops an elegant form with a high canopy suitable for underplanting.
