About
'Elizabeth' is a dwarf Japanese maple with a dense, globular habit reaching 3-4 feet tall at maturity, arising from a witch's broom mutation discovered by Skeeter Rod and named after his wife. Spring foliage emerges in metallic purples and pinks; by late spring, lime-green undertones develop throughout the canopy, creating striking bicolor contrast between the bright new growth and maturing green leaves. Summer retains predominantly green older growth with vibrant red and purple new flushes, while fall transitions to bright scarlet red. According to the growers at Mr Maple, the late spring color phase, when red growth overlays lime-green development, is particularly distinctive and stands out among red dwarf cultivars. This cultivar suits small gardens, conifer plantings, and container cultivation, performing well in zones 5-9 in-ground and zones 6-9 in containers.
