About
'Dragon Tears' is a semi-pendulous Japanese maple with distinctly contorted, spreading branches and large, deeply lobed palmate leaves of dark red that brighten to fiery red in fall. Unlike strictly weeping cultivars such as Ryusen, this selection maintains a more upright, irregular form with cascading branch tips that create architectural interest without full pendulosity. It reaches 6-8 feet tall and spreads 8 feet wide at maturity. According to the growers at Mr Maple, this cultivar was introduced by Ray Jackson and performs equally well as a landscape specimen or container plant, thriving in full sun and tolerating staking to enhance its naturally contorted form.
