Acer palmatum 'Dark Ghost' Japanese Maple

'Dark Ghost' is a variegated Japanese maple with deep purple to nearly black foliage marked by subtle dark reticulated veining, particularly prominent on older growth. Summer color transitions in fall to deep maroon, then brightens to scarlet red. The cultivar reaches 8-10 feet in height within ten years, developing a strong upright habit with slight semi-pendulous character. According to the growers at Mr Maple, 'Dark Ghost' is the newest and one of the darkest members of the Ghost Series, bred by Talon Buck Hults; morning sun and afternoon shade enhance color intensity and prevent summer bleaching, and the striking dark foliage contrasts elegantly with lighter-colored companion maples.
