About
Acer palmatum 'Chiba' is a compact shrub suitable for bonsai cultivation or garden accent planting, typically reaching 4-5 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide at maturity. The small, deeply lobed leaves feature an elongated center lobe and emerge with rusty-red margins in full sun that fade to solid green; shade encourages entirely green foliage and is preferred in hot climates. Fall color transitions from yellow to orange. This cultivar is occasionally conflated with 'Kashima', though 'Kashima' demonstrates more vigorous growth extending later into summer.
