About
'Black Hole' is a purple-red Japanese maple distinguished by ghost-like reticulation, a variegation where darker veins contrast with lighter red leaf margins, that is most visible in spring. This cultivar, introduced by Talon Buchholz of Buchholz Nursery as part of the post-Ghost series, reaches approximately 5-6 feet tall and wide, developing a notably denser and more compact habit than related reticulated cultivars such as 'Purple Ghost'. The foliage darkens to deep purple-red or maroon depending on growing conditions and season, making it well-suited for smaller gardens, containers, and layered plantings where a rounded, non-vertical form is desired.
