Acer palmatum 'The Bishop' Red Japanese Maple

'The Bishop' is an upright Japanese maple with vigorous, compact growth reaching approximately 8 feet tall at maturity, developing a uniform, dignified canopy suitable for focal-point plantings. Spring foliage emerges bright red with green veining, shifting to bronze tones in summer; autumn color intensifies to a brilliant red display. According to the growers at Mr Maple, this cultivar was selected by Henry Holman of Kingsville Nurseries, one of the early pioneers in popularizing Japanese maples in America. The tree performs best with early morning sun and late afternoon shade, which deepens and sustains the bronze and red tones; heavy shade tends to reduce color saturation. Its refined structural form and reliable seasonal color progression make it an enduring choice for garden design, often overlooked in contemporary plantings despite its exceptional characteristics.
