Acer palmatum 'Beni otake' Red Bamboo Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum 'Beni otake' is a linearilobum cultivar with narrow, strap-like foliage that is slightly wider and more robust than typical members of its group. New leaves emerge dark maroon in spring, hold that color well into early summer, then transition to darker green before brightening to crimson and scarlet in fall; late-summer flushes of secondary red growth often appear at branch tips, creating a striking two-toned effect. The plant grows faster than most linearilobum types, developing an initially upright form that becomes more rounded and open with maturity, reaching approximately 10-12 feet tall and 6-8 feet wide in ten years, with an airy, graceful branching habit distinct from stockier red Japanese maples. It tolerates full sun well, even in warmer climates, and performs best with morning or afternoon light to display the luminous quality of its foliage. According to the growers at Mr Maple, 'Beni otake' traces its origins to Edsel Wood, a mid-20th-century plant collector who discovered it as a seedling, then famously auctioned it off at a spaghetti dinner to introduce it into the nursery trade, a unique and charming entry into cultivation. The cultivar remains one of the most sought-after linearilobum reds and pairs well in Japanese gardens where its bamboo-like leaf texture and open structure evoke the essence of traditional Asian landscape design.
